A New Awakening

Many people my age don’t really realize how much the world has changed in our lifetime. We are notorious for being a generation of teenagers and twenty-somethings that are not well versed in both world and American history. I came across a story that really puts some of the changes over the past twenty years, and their remarkable nature, into perspective. Just recently, a man in Poland who has been in a coma for the past 19 years awoke and pronounced that democracy in Poland was a surprise. “When I went into a coma there was only tea and vinegar in the shops, meat was rationed and huge petrol lines were everywhere,” the man said. “Now I see people on the streets with cell phones and there are so many goods in the shops it makes my head spin.” If you think about it, just 5-10 years ago both this blog and the labtop used to write it would not have been possible in their current forms. And now, there are advances such as touch screen computing, most notably the recent unveiling ofMicrosoft Surface. And just Friday I was at a technology exhibit here at UW and saw both a 3-D scanner and a 3-D printer, capable of producing perfect models of DNA and protein strands, as well as just cool models of whatever the mind can dream up (Link). It really is interesting to step back occasionally just to see where we’ve been, where we are, and where we’re going.
