Crew Week in Review: June 6 – 12

Now, I’m officially worried.  The Brewers had a major opportunity, again, to show just what they were made of this past week (and even before that) with some match ups where they could have either shown they were playoff contenders, or they could bring their true colors to light.  Well, we lost the final game against the Cubs, dropped 2 of 3 to the Rangers and then to put a cherry on top, we were no-hit by the Tigers last night.  All this added up to a 1-4 week (2 off days).  I’m sorry, you cannot go 1-4 in a week and expect to be playing serious playoff baseball.  You cannot drop 2 of 3 to a team with the worst starting pitching ERA in a long time.  You cannot lose games to divisional opponents at home.  And I know Justin Verlander is a good, young pitcher, but good teams still manage at least one hit.  I’m a fan of this team, but we are at a major low point right now.  The problem is, I don’t know where we can go.  The pieces are there, they are just not performing.  Our offense has been on vacation the past several weeks, and although they have not given up too many runs, our pitching staff (bullpen and starting rotation) has not been there when we needed a pick-me-up.  Good teams make up for deficiencies on one side of the ball with great play on the other, and the Crew is just not doing that right now.  The only external change available to us it to call up Yo, but we are coming into a time where our 5th starter will be used less and less and I don’t believe Vargas deserves a demotion to the bullpen and I don’t want Yo out in the pen either.  Other than that possible move, the team needs to do some soul searching and find that team that played tremendously in April.  It’s there, it’s just gotten lost in the May and Early-June months.  And for the love of all that is Holy, adjust the lineup.  Get Counsell out of the lead off spot.

Brewer of the Week:  This week it’s Ryan Braun.  Fielder again put up some solid numbers, but it’s safe to say that Ryan Braun has been just as impressive, relative to his amount of big league experience.  Prince can’t win every week….or can he?

Today’s Game: Beermakers @ Tigers, 6:05CT

  • Television: FSN-Wisconsin
  •  Pitching Matchup: LHP Chris Capuano (5-5, 4.35 ERA) vs LHP Mike Maroth (4-2, 5.29 ERA)
  • Predictions:
    • I see Cappy getting touched up in this one.  I envision his line to be: 5.1 IP, 5 K, 1 BB, 5 ER
    • As far as our hitters go, I do not predict good things.  Maroth has a high ERA, but he pitches in the AL, so adjust that down a point or two.  Fielder will continue to hit lefties surprisingly well (2 hits) and Braun comes back after a day off and gets a double.  Mench will also contribute tonight with an RBI or two.
    • The Tigers just have too much offense: Brewers 2, Tigers 7
