Crew Week In Review: June 13 – 19

What a difference a week and a no hitter makes.  Last week I was sure that the old Crew had reemerged from the depths of the current team and that we would again find ways to lose games that we should have won.  Waiter, I’ll take that order of crow with a side of fries please.  Ever since we were blanked both in the runs and hits column by Verlander, we have been a different team.  Since that game, over the past week, the Brewers have gone 6-1.  Even that one loss came in the final moments after a tremendous comeback effort in Minnesota.  Taking 2 of 3 from the Tigers and Minnesota, two good AL teams, is something that a playoff caliber team does.  We have the chance to ______ the Giants today, but we must go against their ace in Barry Zito.  Looking over the schedule for the rest of the first half of the season, I believe the Brewers have a great shot to solidify their lead in the NL Central.  They finish their series with the Giants today then play 6 more at home against the Royals and Astros, then off for a 10 game road trip to finish off the first half against the Cubs, Pirates and Nats.  I can see us taking 2 of 3 from both the Royals and ‘Stros, 1 of 3 from the Baby Bears (we always struggle at Wrigley) and then 3 of 4 from the Bucs and 2 of 3 from the Nats.  That would put our record at 51-37 (with a win today) or 50-38 (with a loss today).  Not even I would have predicted 50 wins by the All Star Break.

Brewer of the Week:  Just to ensure that Prince doesn’t get all the accolades every week, I’m giving out co-Brewers of the Week this week.  Prince gets one for having what must be one of the best stretches of hitting in Crew history this past week.  The other goes to the man known as Yo.  He pitched wonderfully in his first major league start and hopefully he’ll keep up that momentum and make for some difficult decisions when Cappy is ready to come back.

Today’s Game: Giants @ Crew, 1:05 CT

  • Television: FSN  Radio: Brewers Radio Network (1310 WIBA in Madison)
  • Pitching Matchup: Barry Zito (6-7,  4.41 ERA) vs Claudio Vargas (5-1, 3.86 ERA)
  • Predictions:
    • Claudio has been a tremendous surprise at the back end of this rotation.  Everyone knew he had talent, but to realize it at this point is awesome.  I see him having another quality outing with a line of: 6.1 IP, 4K, 2BB (Barry gets 1 of them), 3ER
    • Our hitters will have some good success against Zito.  His last two starts (against Oakland and Boston) were un-Zitolike and I just think that he is not worth the money he is being payed.  I see Braun having some success against him, getting 2 hits (one of which is a double).  I do not see a HR from Fielder today, but I think Weeks has a chance at hitting one.
    • The crystal ball shows a _______ in the future for the Crew: Brewers 4, Giants 3
