Crew Week in Review: June 27 – July 3

We’ve hit an important stretch in the Crew schedule.  They have a big road trip through Chicago, The Burgh, and Washington DC.  We managed to take only 1 of 3 against the hot Cubs, and have so far split the series against the Pirates.  The Crew went 3-3 last week, but we ran into a streaking Chicago squad.  These next 5 games are very important.  We need to take at least one more from the Pirates and then 2 of 3 from the Nats if we are to maintain a hold on our Central division lead.  It would be great if we could win 4 of our next 5 games, but it may be tough on the road.  On a side note, we need to move Yo out of the pen.  He looked rattled when he came into the game yesterday and it showed.  It is akin to the situation of a NL position player being put in the DH spot during an interleague series.  There is a different mindset that a pitcher needs to have when he comes out of the pen.  His warm up is different and he often comes into a situation where there is limited room for error.  It is not a good idea to develop him as a bullpen player this year, even if it keeps his innings down.  Put Bush or Vargas, who have reached their peak, into the pen and allow Yo to develop as a starter, not as a reliever with no room for error.

Brewer of the Week:  This was a tie.  When you have both the NL Pitcher of the Month and NL Rookie of the Month on your team, you’ve got to give them both credit.  This week’s honors go to Ben Sheets and Ryan Braun.

Today’s Game: Brewers @ Pirates, 3:05 pm CT

  • Television: FSN Wisconsin     Radio: Brewers Radio Network (1310 WIBA in Madison)
  • Pitching Matchup: Claudio Vargas RHP (6-1, 4.29 ERA) vs Ian Snell RHP (6-5, 2.9 ERA)
  • Predictions:
    • Claudio has been pitching just OK the last few outings, but has been getting a lot of help from the offense.  Unfortunately, he goes up against Snell who has been pitching rather well his last few times out (except for a 5 run performance against the Angels).  Claudio continues his habit of short stints and ends up with the following line: 5IP, 4K, 2BB, 4ER (Gets a no decision)
    • Our offense will have a hard time against Snell today.  He is equally good against both sides of the plate and is dominating at home.  I can see a HR by Jenkins and a few hits from Hart and Braun, but not much else.
    • There will be a lack of Brewer’s fireworks for this 4th of July holiday: Pirates 6. Brewers 4
