Law School Orientation: Day 2 aka “A Day of Weeds and BBQ”

When I got up this morning, I looked outside and saw rain.  This usually wouldn’t be a big deal, but of course we just happened to have our community service day scheduled on a rainy day.  I’m not going to lie, I thought about going back to bed.  That quickly faded, though.  The rain actually let up and the sun even managed to shine for a while.  It was probably a good thing to get out into the “community” because we will all soon plant roots in the law school building and lose track of the world around us.  I envision emerging from the building one day and it being one of those over-used scenes in movies where the world outside is a now a futuristic landscape and the main character has been passed by by time.  Anyways, our group really had a great time doing our service project.  It wasn’t hard work by any means and we all seemed to join together well in doing it.  It didn’t hurt that we finished early either.  The night ended with a BBQ catered by a local restaurant and low and behold there were kegs in the atrium of the law school building.  To those not from WI it provided for a bit of a shock.  For those of us from here, it was not too surprising.  The BBQ provided another great opportunity for everyone to get together and learn more about their fellow 1Ls.  Today looks to provide the first real concrete evidence that we actually will begin classes in a few days: buying books.  The rest of the activities are merely secondary.  I guess after we have reading materials we will actually have to do something.  Man, that kinda sucks.
